About Jean Daoud

 Scientific Innovations: Holistic Method

He created and developed the Holistic Method (since 1981), with three subdivisions:

A- Play, Art, And Creativity Therapy

He taught Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy –the Therapeutic branch of his Holistic Method– in the psychology department of the Lebanese University and has been training psychotherapists on his method since 1986.

B- The Sufi Method

Created the Sufi method in actor training (hundreds of actors, trainers, and activists in the field of nonviolence have been trained according to this approach).

He is the author of the theory of Artistic Sufism, followed by the Dramaturgy of the Actor (its applications are throughout his method).

C- Creative Pedagogy

He established and developed holistic techniques in creative education and sustainable human development. (Its applications are in the field of education and personal and community development.

His Holistic method has also witnessed high demand and implementation beyond these fields, with applications for instance, in non-violence training, dance, and employee support among others.

Conferences and Seminars about Jean Daoud’s method

A- Scientific Congress of Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy

The congress was held at the Lebanese Order of Medical Doctors in December 2016. It addressed the therapeutic aspect of Jean Daoud’s approach: ” Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy” through a series of research and field experiences conducted over thirty years of his students’ practical experience in various fields of psychology: psychiatric hospitals, private clinics, displaced persons and refugees, children, adolescents, prisoners, addiction rehabilitation, nursing homes, etc.

B- Seminars on his book “The Democratic Hyena”

  1. The first seminar was held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the Lebanese University. A group of researchers from the Lebanese University participated: Dr. George Sfeir, Dr. Leila Dagher, Dr. Najat Salibi Tawil, Dr. Hoda Rizk, and Dr. Yola Haddad. March 24, 1999.
  2. The second seminar was held at the Cultural Movement – Tripoli. Participants included Dr. Desiree Saqqal, Dr. Najat Salibi Tawil, Mr. Hassan Khoury, and Mr. George Bakassini. June 20, 1999.

C- A seminar entitled “The Absolute Human Being in the Works of Jean Daoud”

It was held at the Higher Institute for Doctoral Studies in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in 2017. A group of professors from the Lebanese University – Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture and Faculty of Arts and Humanities participated in it.

D- A seminar about his play “Between Me and Me: Her”

The seminar was organized by the “Tajawuz” Cultural and Intellectual Association in 2006 at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture of the Lebanese University.

  5. He supervised more than two hundred academic theses within the framework of the postgraduate diploma (DES) and master’s degrees in theater and cinema.
  6. He supervised the translation, adaptation, and direction of more than two hundred theatrical works.

B- Faculty of Education

At the Faculty of Education, he taught the courses: “Education and the Art of Acting” (the course framework was a professional and experimental), Research Methodology, Textual Analysis, Playwriting, and Theater and School Curricula, in addition to courses on training educator on the use of theater in education and its “Teaching Track” (training and observation, training and participation, and training and practice) where he supervised students’ implementation of the principles he taught them.

He also supervised the production of dozens of students’ works in the Department of Theater Education as part of their graduation projects.

He has also served as the Theater Department Coordinator since he established it.

He founded and organized the “First Festival of Theater and Performances” in Lebanon and the Arab World

He founded and organized the first festival of theater and performances in Lebanon and the Arab World in 1983, and funded it. Participating plays: “The Guest” or “The Toot Family”, “The Pot is Lost”, “The Zoo Story”, and “The Blue Comedy”.

He founded the “Beirut Theatre Congress”

He founded the Beirut Theatre Congress and was elected its Secretary General.

  1. The conference was held in its first session in 2003 with the participation of more than thirty Lebanese, Arab and European researchers and academics, and it was entitled: “The Reality of the Theatrical Movement in Lebanon and the Arab World”.
  2. The second session of the conference was held in 2005 with the participation of more than forty Lebanese, Arab and European researchers, and it was entitled: “The Actor in the Arab World, Aspirations and Prospects”.

The conference proceedings included dozens of valuable papers by a distinguished group of academics from Egypt, Tunisia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, and some Arab theater practitioners based in Europe.

Educational, Human Development, and Creative Consultant

  1. He provided dozens of consultations on developing the field of psychology and its curricula, and on developing professional training in the field to meet the requirements of the psychology profession.
  2. He provided hundreds of consultations regarding academic development, developing and promoting scientific research, and advancing the national university.
  3. He provided dozens of consultations regarding the development of undergraduate and master’s degree curricula and the establishment of new master’s programs.
  4. Developmental planning, proposals, and responses to consultations aimed at improving the university and the quality of education. (This team worked for more than six years (2014-2020)
  5. He provided technical consultations in the field of theater architecture.
  6. He provided consultations in the field of citizenship and peace education. He also conducted a series of workshops that made his methodology available to organizers and facilitators of nonviolent movements – in cooperation with the Lebanese Association for Civil Rights, the Spanish Association for Nonviolence, and the Arab University for Nonviolence (AUNHOR).
  7. He submitted proposals and participated in the preparation for a conference to revive Lebanese television, and he participated in the aforementioned conference (1986).

Among his other activities

  1. He has proposals regarding the development of education in schools. He participated in a conference of the Psychology Department at the Lebanese University on the topic of “What School Do We Want?” where he introduced the Creative Education branch of his Holistic method as a pathway for freeing education itself and the children’s growth from unnecessary constraints.
  2. Participated in planning youth development programs.
  3. He prepared and participated in the Theatre Conference (Lebanon 1982), the first national conference in the field in Lebanon.
  4. He taught mathematics at the intermediate and secondary levels for ten years.

He founded the “Theater for Life” association, aiming at improving the lives of individuals and communities through arts, and the “For Quality Education” association. He chairs both associations.

Establishing and Forming Professionals in Lebanon

He founded the “Laboratory of Dramaturgy, Acting and Texts

It is an active research and training laboratory in actor training, writing, and directing. Since 1981, it has trained hundreds of actors and launched dozens of research projects on actor training, dramaturgy, and the role of dramaturgy in actor training, writing, and directing.

He founded the “Creative Education Laboratory”

Through this workshop, since the 1980s, he has worked on developing approaches and techniques that allow for the use of theater and the arts in creative education. He has trained hundreds of educator on including creativity in their pedagogical approach and teaching methods. A parallel and complementary experience to this workshop was the educational workshop on children’s creativity, which was the first space of practice for the trained educators.

He adapted the actor’s techniques of his Holistic Method to peace education and non-violence: theater, anti-violence, and peacebuilding.

  1. Training the first Arab group of nonviolent activists in thought, education, and approach to peaceful struggle (2004).

Creative Performance in Dance

He gave a workshop entitled “Performance Creativity” to the Lebanese National Team in Sports Dance (Mont La Salle, 2007).

A Therapeutic Workshop for Young Addiction Prevention

He gave a therapeutic workshop to immunize young people against addiction (a workshop that lasted nine months, Mother of Light Association- Oum el Nour, a specialized organization in addiction prevention and treatment, 2008).

He gave a therapeutic workshop for recovering addicts (a workshop that lasted nine months, Mother of Light Association- Oum el Nour, 2013).

Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy Laboratory (permanent professional training)

Within this professional framework, he trains psychotherapists to work according to the therapeutic branch of his Holistic method: Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy. The workshop cycle lasts between nine months and a year, depending on the weekly frequency. One of the workshops extended for four years (2013-2018); the trainee took part in the “First Scientific Congress on Art, Play, and Creativity Therapy” where they related their experiences in applying Daoud’s method in different psychotherapeutic domains (the papers of this conference were published in a book).

He gave dozens of specialized workshops in actor training, including the Sharjah workshop – May 2006, and the Oman workshop – December 2013 … In addition to workshops in Beirut since 1986.

Training Educators and Teachers in Creative Education

  1. He gave a series of workshops in training educators and teachers in creative education, including a workshop organized by the French Cultural Mission in Lebanon, Beirut (2005).

The ongoing workshop in the Dramaturgy, Acting and Texts Laboratory has been running since 1986. This workshop was accompanied by a number of parallel workshops in Beirut and the Arab world.

Play, art, and creativity therapy (short workshops)

He has conducted a series of workshops on Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy techniques since 1986, in addition to a lecture-workshop in Tripoli in 2011, dozens of workshops to train psychotherapists on using his Holistic Method or “Play, Art, and Creativity Therapy” techniques in their work, and the Free Academy Workshop on Play and Art Therapy for Psychologists from 2013 to 2020.

Screenwriting Workshop for Film and Television

He gave a two-month screenwriting workshop for film and television (Byblos). He also trained screenwriters for more than thirty groups.
